2016 Turkey 2K Trot: the race to beat the dean!
Each year, the UBC Community United Way Campaign kicks off with the Week of Caring – a week filled with events and fundraisers designed to raise money and awareness for programs that help children, families and seniors in need in the BC Lower Mainland. The Applied Science Turkey 2K Trot has become a much-anticipated staple in this annual campaign and each year, the competition gets more fierce as competitors vie to be the top male and female runners and for the coveted achievement of being able to beat the dean.
As always, the weather cooperated and the sun shone bright. Faculty, staff, students and alumni from across campus participated in the race; the Engineering Undergraduate Society's Godiva Band powered the runners and walkers on with an inspirational score, while Sigma Phi Delta – Theta and Alpha Omega Epsilon – Eta held a BBQ and bake sale to refuel the exhausted participants.
Congratulations to the winners: Geoff Martinson (Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences) and Neasa Coll (Faculty of Medicine) and to the other 35 runners who beat Dean Marc Parlange, P.Eng.! The Beat the Dean campaign is the dean's annual promise to match the donation of all runners who beat his race time. As a result, the total fundraised this year sums to an impressive $6,500.
Huge thanks to the 134 race participants and 46 volunteers for coming out, and to our sponsors: The Hot Box Yoga; Granville Island Brewing Co.; Doughgirl Bakery, Balloonatics Design, UBC Recreation, UBC Parking and the UBC Mechanical Engineering Department!
