## Undergraduate Programs

### 1st Year

Students admitted into the Bachelor of Applied Science (Engineering) degree directly from high school will take the [foundational year](/programs/undergraduate/foundation-year "Foundation Year") curriculum which focuses on chemistry, math, physics, communications, and introductory engineering courses. It is designed to prepare all first-year engineering students with a strong knowledge base for a solid and rewarding professional career, and give students time to explore the engineering disciplines available to them.

#### Vantage One Engineering

For international students, UBC Vantage College offers a unique first-year university program called [Vantage One](https://vantagecollege.ubc.ca/). The program combines one year of academic degree-focused credits with intensive academic English preparation.

### 2nd-Year Placement

At the end of year one, students complete the [2nd-year placement process](https://academicservices.engineering.ubc.ca/degree-planning/2nd-year-placement/) to apply for one of the 14 [engineering programs](/programs/undergraduate "Undergraduate Programs") available, which they will begin in second year. Students are encouraged to explore their options by visiting the open houses, reading through department pages, connecting with current students and faculty and doing some research of their own.
