### Why did you want to study engineering? 

I’ve always been curious about how things around us work – from something as simple as taking an elevator to the complex systems behind it. That curiosity led to my interest in engineering. I find it fascinating that the calculations and concepts you learn in class can be applied to design prototypes and develop solutions to real-world problems.

### You’re originally from Lebanon – why did you choose to move around the world to study at UBC? 

I wanted to attend a university recognized globally for its strong academics, particularly in engineering.

I was drawn to the chance to learn from leading faculty and gain hands-on experience through innovative projects that prepare students to tackle real-world challenges. Beyond academics, I also wanted to get involved outside the classroom through the co-op program, events and various clubs, while building a strong community and meaningful connections. UBC offered all of that and more.







Another major factor influencing my decision was receiving the [International Major Entrance Scholarship (IMES)](https://vantagecollege.ubc.ca/scholarships-awards), which was a great honour and provided me with valuable support throughout my studies at UBC.

### You were part of the Vantage One Engineering program. Tell us about your experience. 

[Vantage One Engineering](https://vantagecollege.ubc.ca/engineering?utm_source=chatgpt.com) gave me the opportunity to develop my engineering skills through hands-on projects while working closely with international students from diverse backgrounds. One of the highlights was our multidisciplinary engineering project, where we designed and built a scaled-down energy recovery clothes dryer. We were thrilled to receive the Best Project Award.

I was also selected to be the student speaker at the [Vantage Capstone Conference](https://vc-capstoneconference-2023.sites.olt.ubc.ca/), where I represented Vantage Engineering and shared our first-year experience. We had the chance to study at both the Vancouver and Okanagan campuses and connect closely with the professors and staff who made the program such a supportive community.

> I chose mechanical engineering because I was drawn to how broad the field is and the variety of directions it can lead to throughout your career.

Having had the chance to study at both the Vancouver and Okanagan campuses, I really valued my experience at UBC Okanagan. The smaller campus created a close-knit environment where I found it easier to connect with professors and other students. It also gave me more opportunities to get involved and contribute to campus life.





### What have been some of the highlights of your time at UBC? 

> Looking back, it’s really about the people and opportunities!

Teamwork is a big part of engineering, and it’s one of the things that makes the experience so collaborative. I’ve really enjoyed the diverse projects we work on at UBC, such as a recent biomedical engineering course project on fascia, which I found particularly interesting.

Outside of academics, I’ve had the opportunity to mentor Grade 9-10 female students on STEM and engineering pathways. I’ve also participated in a few engineering events and activities on campus.

### Tell us about your co-op position at Greenlight Innovation. 

In 2025, I completed an eight-month co-op work term at [Greenlight Innovation](https://www.greenlightinnovation.com/), a leading global supplier of hydrogen fuel cell and electrolyser testing equipment. I worked as a Commissioning Project Support Co-op, where I supported commissioning and project engineers and gained experience across the technical, project and operational aspects of engineering projects.

I also had the opportunity to work across different functions, which helped me understand how multiple teams collaborate to bring projects from development to execution. This experience gave me valuable insight into the clean energy industry, engineering project execution, and the importance of cross-functional collaboration. I really valued the opportunity to learn alongside experienced engineers and work within such a supportive team!

### Do you feel that you have changed as a person since starting university? 

I’ve definitely become more independent and more confident in handling things on my own. Moving away from home as an international student was a big adjustment, and university pushed me to step outside my comfort zone in many ways. I’ve learned how to manage challenges, communicate with different people and become more comfortable putting myself out there.

### How kind of impact do you want to make as an engineer? 

I had a great experience during my co-op at Greenlight, where I saw how you can contribute to the progress of a project.

> It showed me how even small improvements can contribute to better solutions and outcomes.

Going forward, I’d like to carry that mindset into my career by finding practical ways to solve problems, improve processes and develop better solutions.





### What advice would you give to students considering UBC, particularly those interested in engineering? 

Make the most of everything UBC has to offer, including networking events, activities and design clubs. Get to know the people in your program – the students, professors and TAs – because these are the people who are going to shape your experience. Take the time to make friends, as this is a big part of the university experience. I also strongly encourage to apply to the co-op program and go above and beyond your assigned tasks, maximizing your learning and finding meaningful ways to contribute.

> Finally, make sure to get to know your campus and the city you’re living in, whether that’s Vancouver or Kelowna, and enjoy your time there!
