The first-year engineering design courses aren’t identical on the two campuses. So if you are in Vancouver and chatting with a friend in Kelowna, you’ll discover that you are working on different kinds of projects. But the end result is the same: you will finish first year with hands-on experience of working on open-ended challenges to come up with innovative solutions. [Foundation Year Curriculum](https://engineering.ubc.ca/programs/undergraduate/foundation-year) [First Year Advantage at UBC](https://engineering.ubc.ca/spotlight/why-engineering/first-year-advantage-of-ubc-engineering) ## **Choosing your program** UBC Vancouver offers 14 different engineering programs: biomedical, chemical and biological, chemical, civil, computer, electrical, engineering physics, environmental, geological, integrated engineering, manufacturing, materials, mechanical and mining engineering. UBC Okanagan offers five engineering programs: civil, computer, electrical, manufacturing and mechanical. > You can also choose a concentration within your program, which means that you’ll take specific electives in your later years to build your expertise in that area, kind of like a mini minor. Depending on your program choice, you may be able to do a concentration in biomedical, mechatronics or aerospace. In civil engineering, you can do a concentration in environmental engineering or resilient infrastructure management. While the short answer might be that you should choose UBC Vancouver if your heart is set on a program like mining or materials engineering that’s only offered in Vancouver, the long answer is a little different! Keep in mind that your top program choice might change after first year (as it does for the majority of our students) and that you have some flexibility to finetune your degree in a particular area through the electives you choose and the work experience you accumulate over the program. Another factor to consider is that some engineering programs at UBC Vancouver have caps on the number of students they can accept, so they can be competitive and you might not get into your top selection. At UBC Okanagan, there aren’t restrictions on the number of students for each program, so you are guaranteed to be placed in the program of your choice. ## **The same opportunities to connect with employers through co-op** Co-op is an incredible way to gain well-paid work experience that can help you build connections, test out different career paths, explore different engineering disciplines in your degree. > At both Kelowna and Vancouver, we have strong connections with local employers who are always keen to hire our students. And given UBC’s reputation as having one of the country’s best engineering programs, employers are very interested in hiring our students for co-op jobs, no matter which campus they are studying at. Which you prefer is entirely a matter of personal preference and the type of undergraduate student experience that appeals to you. > Are you more of a big city person or do you prefer a smaller urban centre? How do you feel about a more temperate (and rainy) climate compared to a climate of four distinct seasons? Would you rather be on a larger campus with more students or a smaller campus with fewer students? Your answers to these questions might sway you in the direction of UBC Vancouver or UBC Okanagan.
