APSC researchers receive New Frontiers in Research funding
Four APSC professors — Mattia Bacca, Jordi Honey-Roses, Carlos Molina Hutt and Lyndia Wu — have received funding through the "Exploration" stream of the Government of Canada's New Frontiers in Research Fund, which supports early-career researchers pursuing innovative projects that are high risk and high reward.
Comprised of three streams (Exploration, Transformation and International), the new funding initiative aims "to invest $275 million over the next five years beginning in fiscal 2018-19, and $65 million ongoing, to fund international, interdisciplinary, fast-breaking and high-risk research."
The funding was announced at Laurentian University earlier this week by the Honourable Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science and Sport. The initial investment of $38 million will support the exploratory work of 157 researchers across Canada who have five years or less of experience since their first academic appointment.
The APSC recipients' projects are:
- Mattia Bacca, "The Energetics of Life: a new perspective in Cytoskeletal Mechanics" ($250,000)
- Jordi Honey-Rosés, "The UBC Housing and Well-Being Project" ($248,950)
- Carlos Molina Hutt, "Reducing the catastrophic risk of a Cascadia megathrust earthquake" ($250,000)
- Lyndia (Chun) Wu, "Investigating Brain Trauma Accumulation from Subconcussive Head Impacts and Differences between Male and Female Ice Hockey Players" ($250,000)
