Charles Haynes named new head of Chemical and Biological Engineering

On July 1, 2019, Charles Haynes will succeed Peter Englezos as the new head of the UBC Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering.
A UBC chemical and biological engineering professor, associate director of Michael Smith Laboratories and Canada Research Chair in Interfacial Biotechnology, Haynes co-founded both the UBC Centre for Blood Research and what is now the UBC BioProducts Institute.
He has also pioneered and licensed a number of technologies that are in widespread use in the biotechnology industry, including TEMPlex™ technology — a system that removes a former bottleneck in high-throughput DNA sequencing that was used by Celera Genomics in their landmark program to sequence the human genome.
A graduate of the University of Texas at Austin (BSc, ‘86) and the University of California, Berkeley (PhD, ’91), Haynes is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and of the Canadian Academy of Engineering. Among his many awards and honours are the Overbeek Medal, the Winnaker Technology Transfer Award and the Merck Bioseparation Sciences Award.
