The role of associate dean, students and professional development, is integral to ensuring students receive the experiences and resources to best contribute to the future of work.

“University education transcends what we study in books and lecture notes, or what we learn from assignments,” said Elmo. “It is important for our students to understand that the role of a university is more than teaching students what we already know.”

“We are delighted to have such an experienced and driven individual like Dr. Elmo in this role,” said James Olson, Dean of the Faculty of Applied Science. “I look forward to seeing the unique professional development and learning initiatives he will develop for all Applied Science students. His vast experience as a teacher, researcher, advisor and member of the engineering community gives us confidence that he will harness his skills and succeed in this leadership position.”

Filling this role is a continuous fulfillment of a dream that started in 2012 when Elmo joined UBC as an assistant professor. Having previously been a bridge between students and the Department of Mining Engineering as an undergraduate advisor, he has learned to appreciate the conversational aspect of learning and hopes to carry it into his new role.

“I know that my role will require listening, team building, and goodwill,” said Elmo. “In the short-term, I would like to continue building on current initiatives as a way to learn more about how Applied Science and UBC operate. In the long-term my plan is to let the need for effectiveness drive initiatives.”

This role was previously held by Professor Bhushan Gopaluni, who was s recently appointed to vice-provost and associate vice-president, faculty planning, pro tem.
