Three recipients of the 2022 Schulich Leader Scholarship — Sarthak Tyagi, Monorama Joshi, and Ethan Chan — have joined UBC Engineering.

Valued at $100,000, the award aims to help create “the next generation of technology innovators” by identifying and supporting the “top entrepreneurial-minded STEM student[s]” in high school graduating classes across Canada. Schulich Leader Scholarships are Canada’s most coveted undergraduate STEM scholarships. Out of a pool of 350,000 candidates, 100 are awarded to entrepreneurial-minded high school graduates enrolling in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math program at 20 partner universities across Canada.

Of the six Schulich Leaders who chose to attend UBC this year, half are entering UBC Applied Science.

Ethan Chan, 17, is a recipient of the $100,000 Schulich Leader Scholarship. A graduate of St. John’s School in Vancouver, Chan will be entering the Faculty of Applied Science this fall at UBC. Chan was selected for his outstanding academic and extracurricular achievements, such as being recognized nationally at the 2021 Canada Wide Science Fair for developing a cerebrospinal fluid detection device and receiving a Gold Medal and the Youth Can Innovate Award.

Manorama Joshi, 17, is a recipient of the $100,000 Schulich Leader Scholarship. A graduate of Westwood Community High School in Fort McMurray, AB, Joshi will be entering the Faculty of Applied Science at UBC this fall. Joshi was selected for her outstanding academic and extracurricular achievements, such as being named a game-changer as a young woman in STEM, entrepreneurship, and advocacy for equity in the 2021 YMM Magazine “Below the Surface: The Energy Edition,” only one of eight women in Fort McMurray published—and the only high school girl to be so recognized.

Sarthak Tyagi, 18, is a recipient of the $100,000 Schulich Leader Scholarship. A graduate of Queen Elizabeth Secondary in Surrey, BC, Tyagi will be entering the Faculty of Applied Science at UBC this fall. Tyagi was selected for his outstanding academic and extracurricular achievements, such as developing Smart Navigation Cane tech to aid blind and visually-impaired individuals. Tyagi has also earned STEM excellence and service awards four years running—facilitating his winning the University of Toronto National Book Award.
