This year marks a significant milestone for UBC Pipeline Integrity Institute (PII) – 10 years of advancing innovation and impacting pipeline education and research. The PII has grown into a thriving hub of academic excellence and industry collaboration.

Since 2015, the PII strives to fill multiple pipeline sector-related needs, including the development of technologies for safe and reliable pipelines, the training of highly qualified pipeline engineers, and the dissemination of technical information to promote the establishment of sound pipeline practices and policies.

UBC is the first university in North America — perhaps even the world — to offer courses in pipeline engineering at the undergraduate level.  Over the past decade, this program has trained hundreds of students, enabling engineering graduates to secure positions in the sector.

The PII’s groundbreaking research, contributes to global best practices in pipeline engineering and integrity management.  The development of advanced pipeline protective coatings and investigations into the complex interactions between buried pipelines and soils during ground movements is directly contributing to the engineering design of safe pipelines.   At the heart of PII’s success is a dedicated community comprised of faculty, industry partners, researchers, and students.  Their collaboration fuels education and innovative pipeline engineering research to ensuring pipelines remain reliable, safe and responsive to the needs of a changing world. The PII looks ahead to new discoveries, building partnerships, and continuing in pipeline research and education with continued support from the sector.

A celebration was held on May 30th, 2025, to mark PII’s 10th anniversary milestone to acknowledge the progress made on the fronts of education and research, appreciate the efforts and goodwill extended by the PII Partners, affiliates, and well-wishers, and the pipeline sector at large.  The students who had excelled in the UBC pipeline engineering courses were presented with a number of awards sponsored by the PII Partners.

Thank you for supporting PII these 10 Years!
