The UBC Engineering class of 1958 held its 63rd reunion luncheon on September 30, 2021 at the West Vancouver Yacht Club. 18 graduates plus 11 special guests attended. Since our 50th reunion, the group has met annually for a delightful lunch at the Yacht club (in addition to the well-attended 60th reunion at Van Dusen Gardens in 2018).
At this year’s affair, the Mechanical Engineering group had the greatest turnout in numbers, with six attending, but 50% of the Metallurgical group came (two out of four!). Shig Saimoto travelled from Kingston, ON and says he plans to retire in Vancouver next year. Clancy Fulton of Burlington, ON also attended and says he will be moving back to the west coast next month. Will there be anyone left in the East?
Don Gunning presented the report by Henry Wakabayashi on our Entrance Award, which was created to mark our 60th reunion. Henry reported that the fund has amounted to around $34,000, and two awards of over $1,300 will be given out this year.
Following lunch, special guest Ralph Sultan (Mech ’56) gave an enjoyable speech about the highlights of his long career, including escapades during his time as EUS President. He concluded with comments on recent changes to the administration of our Professional Engineering Association. A sad time for P. Engs.
