It started at an Old Red New Red event in 2017, when two ’78 Grads were shamed into organizing a reunion by ’71 Grad Gary Wong. An organizing committee was identified, and with Alumni Association support a venue and catering were established. Parallel to the main reunion, Electricals, Civils, EngPhys, GeoRox and Mining had separate dinners and pub nights. Of 207 ’78 Graduates, 62 joined the event with some journeying from as far as Malaysia and Switzerland to attend. Additionally, we were delighted to have five profs present – thanks to Peter Lawrence, Geoff Vickers, Dave Pulfrey, Alan Freeze, and Mike Davies for coming. We minimized formalities to focus on reconnecting, but the APSC Update presentation given by Associate Dean Carol Jaeger was fascinating particularly when most of the old farts in the room realized that with current academic admission thresholds they’d never make it into today’s program! The event concluded with the reuniting of “Joe’s Angels” - our EUS ’78 Executive. Despite his earlier protestations of stage fright, a great impromptu speech was delivered by EUS ’78 President Joe Uyesugi (including trademark borderline non-PC comments) who made a special journey from California to be with us.
