The PBME timetable launched in fall 2018 and offers students the opportunity to follow a path that is a slight modification of the standard first year BASc program. The timetable is designed to provide organized access to courses that are pre-requisites for the 2nd year BME program as well as give students a solid foundation in the application of engineering in the context of biological systems.
Students in the PBME timetable will have courses that vary slightly from the Standard Timetable (STT) in the following way:
Standard Timetable (STT) | Pre-BME Timetable |
APSC 100, 101, 160 | APSC 100, 160, BMEG 101, 102 |
CHEM 154 | CHEM 121, 123 |
WRDS 1501 | WRDS 1501 |
MATH 100, 101, 152 | MATH 100, 101, 152 |
PHYS 157, 158, 159, 170 | PHYS 157, 158, 170 |
Humanities or Social Science elective |
1 Or another first-year English Course.
Applying for a PBME timetable
First round of the supplementary form for 2023W will open from April 1-15. The second round deadline is June 1.
All incoming students with first year standing in the upcoming academic term are eligible to complete a supplementary form for approval to register in a PBME timetable. There are a limited number of timetables and selection is competitive. Submission of the supplementary application does not guarantee that you will be granted permission to register in a PBME timetable.
Note: Biology 11, 12 or equivalent is strongly recommend, but is not required. Students must have completed one or both of Chemistry 12 (or equivalent) and Physics 12 (or equivalent).
PROCESS & DEADLINES:
There are two times to submit the supplementary form for permission to register in the PBME STT. Please see below for 2023W deadlines.
First Round Deadline: April 15 at 11:59pm PDT
Students who have been admitted to the Faculty of Applied Science will be informed of the availability of the online form via email with a link to the form. They will have until April 15 at 11:59pm to complete the form and submit via an online portal. Students who submit the form by the first round deadline will know whether they will be allowed to register in the PBME timetable at the end of April, prior to the deadline for acceptance of their offer of admission to UBC.
Deadline for subsequent rounds: June 1 at 11:59pm PDT
Students who submit the form for the PBME STT between April 16 and June 1 will be considered for a spot in the PBME STT, space permitting. Students will know whether they will be allowed to register in the PBME timetable prior to first year registration – in late June.
Students may email admissions@sbme.ubc.ca if they did not receive a link to the form.
SUPPLEMENTARY FORM
The supplementary form has 3 parts and is submitted via an online portal to which students will be emailed the links. The form should take no longer than an hour to complete.
Part 1: Personal information
Students will be asked to provide personal information, including their name, email, student number and details about their academic history.
Part 2: Questions
There are three questions that students are asked to answer. The first two questions are each limited to 800 characters. They ask for personal insight on why you are interested in biomedical engineering and how it has impacted your life.
The third question is limited to 1750 characters. This question will be more technical. We are not looking for “correct” answers. In fact, there are no right or wrong answers. Students should not be doing intense research into the question (although they are permitted to look up word definitions if they need clarification). Instead what we’re looking for is insight into how the student approaches problems and problem solving.
Part 3: Resume upload
Students are asked to upload a recent copy of their resume.
2ND YEAR PLACEMENT INTO BME
Importantly, acceptance into the PBME timetable does not guarantee students placement in the BME program in 2nd year. However, students in the PBME timetable will be eligible for priority placement as noted in the BME FAQs.
