UBC Geering Up to offer free virtual engineering-themed workshops for high school girls

All-Girls Events

This Saturday, October 17, UBC Geering Up Engineering Outreach will launch a series of free monthly online workshops targeted at girls in grades 8 to 12.

Designed and led by current UBC Engineering students, the “All-Girls Events”, which were held in person prior to the pandemic, aim to teach fundamental engineering concepts and demonstrate the impact that engineers have on our everyday lives.

The hands-on, home-based activities offered at these virtual sessions will show participants how to identify carbon footprints, create an app, build a sustainable city and program robots in a virtual simulator, among other things.

Special student and professional guests will also provide insights into the experience of studying and pursuing a career in engineering — one of the most in-demand undergraduate degrees and one of the best-paid professions in the country, according to Statistics Canada.

Geering Up believes that disciplines like engineering should represent the society they serve. As such, it actively seeks to promote STEM to underrepresented populations and welcomes all trans, genderqueer and non-binary students who may be interested in these workshops to participate.
